Hanuman Chalisa

The Unwavering Devotion
of Lord Hanuman

5 Min Read Bhakti & Strength

“Wherever the glories of Lord Rama are sung, there is Hanuman, his hands folded in reverence, his eyes filled with tears of absolute devotion.”

The Embodiment of Perfect Service

Lord Hanuman occupies a unique space in Hinduism. He is the ultimate, flawless synthesis of unmatched physical strength (Bala), profound intellect and wisdom (Buddhi), and absolute surrender (Bhakti). Born to Anjana and Kesari, and blessed by Vayu (the Wind God), Hanuman’s supernatural abilities were evident from childhood. Yet, what makes Hanuman universally adored is not his mere ability to leap across oceans or lift mountains, but the humility with which he wields and dedicates that power.

When questioned by Sita about how a seemingly simple Vanara (monkey) could cross the treacherous ocean, defeat formidable demons, and find her in the heavily guarded city of Lanka, Hanuman never claimed the glory. He simply stated, "It is by the grace of Lord Rama." This is the pinnacle of the ego-less state (Ahamkara-shunya); where the servant and the master merge into a singularity of purpose.

The Leap of Faith

Hanuman's leap across the ocean to Lanka serves as a massive psychological metaphor. Initially, having forgotten his own divine capabilities due to a childhood curse, Hanuman stood at the shore of the deep ocean, doubting his capacity to cross it. It was Jambavan, the wise elder, who reminded Hanuman of his latent, infinite potential.

Upon realizing his true nature, Hanuman expanded his form and took the Great Leap. In life, we often face massive, seemingly uncrossable 'oceans' of trouble. We, too, forget our inner, divine capabilities until a Guru or a moment of grace reminds us of our true strength. Hanuman teaches us that when our strength is directed by devotion to a higher ideal (like locating Sita for Rama), no obstacle is insurmountable.

Astrology and Hanuman's Protection

In Vedic astrology, Lord Hanuman is the ultimate refuge against the terrifying afflictions of Saturn (Shani Dev) and Mars (Mangal). Legend states that Hanuman rescued Shani Dev from the dungeons of Ravana. In gratitude, Shani promised never to trouble those who authentically pray to Hanuman. The daily recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa is the most prescribed astrological remedy worldwide to eradicate fear, anxiety, obstacles, and negative celestial influences.

Lessons from Bajrangbali

  • Humility in Power: Great power without humility becomes arrogance (like Ravana). Great power wrapped in humility becomes grace (like Hanuman).
  • Focus Forges Miracles: By holding the image of Lord Rama in his heart continuously, Hanuman gained the focus required to accomplish the impossible.
  • Service Above Self: True fulfillment doesn’t come from accumulating things for oneself, but from dedicating one’s existence to the service of a higher, noble cause.

The image of Hanuman tearing open his chest to reveal Rama and Sita dwelling perfectly in his heart proves that God does not reside in distant heavens—He resides within the heart that loves without condition.
